Contract Discussions Heating Up Ahead of 2025 Super League Season
As the Super League season approaches its climax, contract discussions are heating up, with several high-profile players’ futures remaining uncertain for the 2025 season. Love Rugby League examines the seven players fans are most eager to see secure their next moves.
Leeds Rhinos’ back-rower Rhyse Martin is out of contract at the end of the current campaign, and the Papua New Guinea international has attracted interest from fellow Super League sides Leigh Leopards and Warrington Wolves, as well as potential NRL suitors the Dolphins. Rhinos head coach Rohan Smith is keen to retain Martin, who has made 120 appearances for the club since joining in 2019.
Another Leeds player, winger David Fusitu’a, also faces an uncertain future. The New Zealand and Tongan international has struggled with injuries since joining the Rhinos in 2022, and his contract expires at the end of this season. Leeds are yet to announce their plans for the quota-occupying player.
“Zak Hardaker has become a key figure for Leigh Leopards since joining them in 2022, but the former Man of Steel is heavily linked with a move to Hull FC, potentially as a replacement for the Huddersfield-bound Liam Sutcliffe.”
Hardaker’s Leigh teammate, centre Ricky Leutele, is also out of contract at the end of the year and is set to depart the Leopards.
St Helens duo Konrad Hurrell and Waqa Blake are two more players whose futures remain unclear. While Hurrell has expressed a desire to stay, and boss Paul Wellens is keen to retain him, the Tongan’s future is still undecided. Fijian international Blake joined the Saints this season on a one-year deal, and his long-term plans are also uncertain.
Experienced Huddersfield Giants centre Kevin Naiqama is considering retirement, but has left the door open for one more season, while Hull FC captain Danny Houghton’s future is also in question as he deals with injury and the emergence of younger hookers at the club.
