In the lead-up to the Friday night clash between Leeds Rhinos and Warrington Wolves, Sky Sports host Brian Carney shared the financial details of each team’s salary allocation, based on the broadcaster’s research.
Salary Spend Breakdown
Topping the list are the Warriors, the only club said to be spending over £3 million on player salaries this season. Joining them in the £3 million bracket are Catalans Dragons and Warrington Wolves.
Three more clubs – Leeds Rhinos, Huddersfield Giants, and St Helens – are estimated to be spending £2.7 million each. Hull KR are alleged to be spending £2.4 million, while Leigh Leopards are on £2.2 million.
At the lower end of the scale, Hull FC are spending £1.8 million, with Castleford Tigers and Salford Red Devils both on £1.7 million. Notably, London Broncos are reported to be the competition’s lowest spenders at £1.4 million.
“The salary cap remains at £2.1 million, but clubs are permitted to exceed this through various allowances, including the marquee player rule. This season, teams can have up to three marquee players, with differing salary cap impacts depending on their player development status.”
The data provides an intriguing insight into Super League’s financial landscape, particularly highlighting Salford Red Devils’ impressive start to the season despite a relatively modest salary spend compared to their rivals.
