St Helens Remain Contenders Despite Transition Period
St Helens remain in the running for the top spot in Super League this season, despite being in a perceived transitional period. The Saints were the dominant force in Super League, winning four consecutive Grand Finals between 2019 and 2022, before relinquishing their crown to arch-rivals Wigan Warriors in 2023.
As the club faces a rebuild for the next season, a number of key players, including Tommy Makinson, Waqa Blake, Sione Mata’utia, and Konrad Hurrell, are out of contract. However, Saints boss Paul Wellens has provided an update on the club’s retention plans, focusing on the futures of Mata’utia and Hurrell.
Regarding Mata’utia, the club has an option to extend his contract for the 2025 season. Wellens stated that they are giving the player time to decide on his future, as he has a young and growing family, and the club wants to respect his personal situation. Wellens expressed confidence that Mata’utia will remain a Saints player in 2025.
Hurrell, who joined the Saints from Leeds Rhinos, has been a regular in the team this season, making 14 appearances and scoring five tries. Wellens is pleased with Hurrell’s current performances and his application in training, and believes that if the player continues to maintain the same level of dedication, his contract situation can be positively resolved.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding their roster, St Helens remain in contention for the top spot in Super League, showcasing their resilience and adaptability during this transitional period.
