Paul Wellens Unfazed by St Helens’ Future Plans as Head Coach
St Helens’ head coach Paul Wellens has revealed that he is yet to hold discussions about his future at the club beyond the current season, but remains comfortable with the prospect of waiting until later in the year to address the matter.
Wellens, who signed a two-year contract with the Saints at the start of last season, has an option in the club’s favor for an additional year in 2025. Despite the uncertainty surrounding his long-term role, the experienced coach insists he is in no rush to sort out his future.
“I haven’t held talks as yet,” Wellens stated. “We’ll have to have that conversation and sit down at some point and have some stability moving forward, but I’m very comfortable leaving those discussions for now.”
The coach also provided an update on St Helens’ recruitment plans for the 2025 season, suggesting that the club is likely to experience a “minimal” turnover of players. While the Saints are set to lose the services of Lewis Dodd to the NRL, and there have been rumors of Tommy Makinson potentially joining Catalans, Wellens stressed that the overall changes to the squad are expected to be limited.
“We’re going to have a couple that move on, but that happens,” Wellens said. “Our recruitment model is that we always want to retain our better players. We’ve had a lot of success in doing that, and had a number of players who’ve been here a long time.”
The coach also hinted at potential internal options to replace Dodd at the scrum-half position, mentioning the return of Will Roberts from a similar injury and the promotion of George Whitby from the academy to the first-team setup.
As St Helens prepares for the upcoming season, Wellens’ calm and composed approach to his own future reflects the stability and continuity that have underpinned the club’s recent success in the Rugby League.
