St Helens Suffer Disappointing Challenge Cup Defeat to Warrington Wolves
In a resounding result, St Helens have been knocked out of the Challenge Cup by Warrington Wolves, losing 31-8 at home. The game could have been even more lopsided, as Warrington saw one of Matty Ashton’s incredible efforts ruled out, with the video referee unable to overturn the on-field ‘no try’ decision.
Ultimately, Warrington’s four second-half tries cemented their place in the Challenge Cup semi-finals, handing St Helens another loss. The Red Vee had also fallen to Catalans in Perpignan the previous week, and the effects of that grueling defeat seemed to linger, as St Helens folded in the second half.
Trailing just 7-6 at the break, Paul Wellens’ side only managed two points in the second half, while Warrington added 24 unanswered points. Josh Thewlis’ early score was canceled out by Konrad Hurrell, and George Williams’ drop-goal split the teams at halftime. A Jon Bennison penalty briefly restored St Helens’ lead, but from there, it was all Warrington, with Ashton, Connor Wrench, James Harrison, and Man of the Match George Williams all crossing the line.
“We’ve got to learn some lessons very quickly,” acknowledged Paul Wellens.
Despite a strong start to the 2024 season that saw them end rivals Wigan’s unbeaten run, concerns may arise among St Helens fans over the team’s inability to score points. St Helens will now shift their focus to the Super League, with their next game at home against struggling Hull FC, a potential opportunity to rediscover their confidence and try-scoring prowess.
