St Helens Grind Out Hard-Fought Win Over Huddersfield Giants
St Helens moved back up to fourth place in the Super League standings with a hard-fought victory over the Huddersfield Giants. The Saints’ play-off hopes received a timely boost courtesy of this laboured but crucial win, with three rounds of the regular season remaining.
The turning point came when Huddersfield’s Fenton Rogers was shown a red card on the stroke of half-time, allowing St Helens just enough room to squeeze past Luke Robinson’s men. It was a mixed afternoon for Paul Wellens’ side, but they ultimately got the job done to keep their top-four aspirations alive.
Standout Performers
Harry Robertson was the standout performer for the Saints, scoring a well-taken try and growing into the game impressively after an early struggle under the high ball. Sione Mata’utia also shone, with the versatile forward once again proving to be a vital player for the home side.
Jonny Lomax and Moses Mbye were tidy in the halves, while Morgan Knowles was arguably the best forward on the field, putting in a colossal display at both ends of the pitch. However, some of St Helens’ other forwards, such as Alex Walmsley and Matt Whitley, failed to reach their usual high standards on the day.
“It was a hard-earned two points for the Saints, who will be relieved to have secured the victory and moved back up the table as the race for the play-offs heats up. With three crucial rounds remaining, Paul Wellens’ men will be hoping this result can provide a much-needed boost to their top-four aspirations.”
