Rugby League News: Alex Walmsley’s Timely Return Boosts St Helens Ahead of Salford Clash
St Helens have received a timely boost with the return of key prop Alex Walmsley for Thursday’s Super League encounter against Salford Red Devils. Coach Paul Wellens has confirmed that the England international is set to make his long-awaited comeback after spending almost four months on the sidelines due to hamstring and knee injuries.
Walmsley, 34, last featured for St Helens in their Challenge Cup defeat to Warrington Wolves on April 14. However, Wellens revealed that the experienced forward has made a remarkable recovery, with the knee surgery he underwent proving to be a success.
“He’s a little bit ahead of schedule is Alex,” Wellens said. “He’s done a brilliant job in rehab. He’s very diligent in his work and he’s had to be for quite a lengthy period there so it’s great to welcome a player of Alex’s calibre back into the squad and I’m sure he’ll give everyone a lift.”
The coach acknowledged that the decision to start Walmsley or use him as a substitute is yet to be made, as the player has experience in both roles over the course of his career. Wellens also confirmed that the squad that secured a convincing victory at Hull FC last Saturday has emerged unscathed, leaving him with no fresh injury concerns ahead of the Salford clash.
Walmsley’s return will undoubtedly provide a significant boost to St Helens as they look to maintain their strong position in the Super League table. The key prop’s presence in the squad is sure to galvanize the team and inspire their pursuit of success.
