St Helens Secure Alex Walmsley’s Services Until 2026
St Helens have extended the contract of star prop Alex Walmsley, ensuring the England international will remain with the club until the end of the 2026 season. Walmsley was one of several key players set to go off contract at the conclusion of the current campaign, but the Red Vee have now secured his services for a further two years.
This is a significant victory for the club, who are expected to lose veteran winger Tommy Makinson at the season’s end. Retaining Walmsley’s services solidifies their pack as one of the league’s best. The 34-year-old has already made 278 appearances for St Helens and is now poised to surpass the 300-game milestone, cementing his place among the club’s all-time greats.
Walmsley expressed his delight at the new deal, stating:
“I’m really happy, it’s been something that’s been in the pipeline for a while so to get it finalised, sorted, and announced I’m pleased. I am happy and excited for the next two and a half years.”
The prop acknowledged his long-standing association with the club, having spent 14 years with the Red Vee, and hinted at the potential to play beyond his current contract.
Head coach Paul Wellens, who played alongside Walmsley, praised the forward’s leadership and influence within the squad. Wellens highlighted the prop’s understanding of the club’s local identity and his ability to translate the town’s passion into the team’s performances.
This news comes as a welcome boost for St Helens, who will be looking to maintain their dominant form in the upcoming season and secure their place among the sport’s elite clubs.
