Simon Grix Takes On Hull FC’s Head Coach Role Unexpectedly

Unexpected Promotion for Simon Grix as Hull FC’s Head Coach

On a surprising turn of events, Simon Grix found himself in charge of Hull FC earlier than expected, after joining the club at the end of the 2023 season. Grix, who previously worked for the Halifax Panthers, was initially brought in to support former Head Coach Tony Smith. However, Smith’s departure in April, following a string of heavy defeats, led to Grix’s unexpected promotion.

In the aftermath of Hull FC’s first win in 12 games, Grix expressed a sense of relief. The victory marked his first as a Head Coach in the Super League, a significant milestone in his fledgling coaching career. Grix acknowledged the role his former colleague, Tony Smith, has played in shaping his journey, revealing they maintain a good relationship despite the change in leadership.

“Yeah 100% obviously me and Tony, we spoke before this happened, we’ll speak after and that’s sport, unfortunately. But, you know, I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for the relationship with Tony which I’m really grateful for and he’s still someone I’m leading on now it’s not like he’s gone and he’s still there for me,” Grix said.

The win over a struggling Leeds side provided a much-needed boost for the Black and Whites, who have faced harsh criticism from their supporters due to a series of heavy defeats this season. Grix believes the team’s improved effort and fight will help to re-establish a stronger connection with the Hull FC fanbase.

“I think the scramble, the effort stuff, that is the man playing at the weekend for West Hull, he can do that, and at times, we haven’t shown enough fight in that area, so I think your fans definitely see when you’ve had a dig,” Grix explained.

While acknowledging that there is still a long way to go to become the team their fans deserve, Grix is optimistic that the recent victory will serve as a stepping stone towards a brighter future. The club has announced that Australian coach John Cartwright will take over the reins for the 2025 season, but in the meantime, Grix will remain in charge for the remainder of the 2024 campaign.
