Rugby League Pundit Hails Salford’s Sneyd as ‘Man of Steel Elect’
As the Super League season reaches the midway mark, Sky Sports pundit Jon Wells has singled out Salford Red Devils half-back Marc Sneyd as the leading candidate for the coveted Man of Steel award. Speaking exclusively to Love Rugby League, Wells praised Sneyd’s impressive performances, declaring the 33-year-old is in the best form of his career.
“The 2024 season has also seen some players in career-best form. Marc Sneyd, at 33 years of age, is looking like the Man of Steel elect at present – and his performances continue to really impress,” Wells stated.
However, the pundit acknowledged that there are several other stars in the Super League who could challenge Sneyd for the prestigious individual accolade. Warrington Wolves fullback Matt Dufty was highlighted as another standout performer, with Wells lauding the Australian’s all-round game and consistent contributions.
“So too Matt Dufty at the Warrington Wolves; we always knew he was fast, that he could beat men and was devastating in broken field,” Wells said. “What we know a little more now is of his durability. He has featured in 53 of the 54 games Warrington have played since he joined the club in July 2022, and his work-rate, where he has consistently topped 200m a game.”
Wells also identified a group of overseas and domestic players who have regained their best form this season, including Peta Hiku, Matt Moylan, Cain Robb, Sam Wood, and Niall Evalds. Additionally, he highlighted the emergence of several promising young talents, such as Lewis Martin, Logan Moy, Denise Balmforth, Jack Farrimond, and Riley Lumb.
Looking ahead, the Sky Sports pundit expressed his hope that the focus will remain on the on-field action in the Super League, rather than discussions surrounding the controversial IMG grading system. He also urged the competition to take inspiration from the NRL‘s “sport as spectacle” approach, including the implementation of referee microphones and the Captain’s Challenge.
Overall, Wells’ assessment showcases the depth of talent in the Super League and the fierce competition for the coveted Man of Steel award, with Salford‘s Marc Sneyd currently leading the charge.
