Rugby League Weekly Roundup: Drama, Wins, and Disciplinary Concerns

Another Busy Week in the Super League: Disciplinary Drama and Key Matchups

Another busy week in the Super League means clubs will once again be anxious about potential charges and bans from the RFL’s Match Review Panel, as disciplinary drama unfolds. Last week, Warrington’s George Williams was the sole player to receive a ban, getting a one-match Penalty Notice for a Grade B (higher end) dangerous contact, ruling him out of the ‘dress rehearsal’ for the upcoming Challenge Cup final against Wigan Warriors. In that game, a late try and conversion from Stefan Ratchford were not enough to overcome Harry Smith’s first-half drop-goal, as the Wolves fell 18-19.

Top-of-the-Table Clash and Derby Victories

The preceding night saw a top-of-the-table clash between St Helens and Catalans Dragons. The Saints ended their five-game losing streak against the Catalan side, prevailing 24-12. Despite Catalans dominating much of the first half, tries from Konrad Hurrell, Mata’utia, Makinson and Lees secured the victory for the home team. However, a brief melee during the game could result in sanctions from the Match Review Panel.

Elsewhere, Hull FC’s struggles continued as they fell 24-18 to Huddersfield Giants, despite late tries from Logan Moy and Cam Scott. Hull KR’s form has also shown signs of wavering, but they managed a 12-0 win over Leigh Leopards. In the derby clash, a Marc Sneyd-inspired Salford Red Devils eased past London Broncos 34-4, while Leeds Rhinos cruised to a 32-4 victory over Castleford Tigers.

Disciplinary Concerns and Potential Sanctions

Disciplinary concerns will be high on the agenda, with several incidents potentially warranting further action from the Match Review Panel. These include a possible shoulder charge by Catalans’ Tariq Sims, a high shot from Franck Maria, and potential head contact from Romain Navarrete and Ben Garcia. Wigan Warriors will also be sweating on the availability of Adam Keighran, who was red-carded for a dangerous tackle, and Tyler Dupree, who was involved in a potential headbutt. Salford’s Oli Partington and Chris Hankinson may also face scrutiny from the Panel.
