Rugby League Prodigy Adam Holroyd Thriving Under Sam Burgess’ Tutelage at Warrington Wolves
Warrington Wolves’ academy product Adam Holroyd has been enjoying a remarkable breakthrough campaign under the guidance of head coach Sam Burgess. The 20-year-old back-rower has made 17 appearances for Burgess’ side this season, a remarkable feat considering he was only an 18th-man in the opening round.
Holroyd, who joined Warrington’s academy in 2019 after coming through the scholarship at neighbouring Widnes Vikings, credits Burgess’ clear direction and trust as key factors in his rapid rise.
“I remember speaking to Sam (Burgess) in the early weeks of pre-season and he just made it really clear. He said my only goal should be Round One, to be in contention,” Holroyd explained.
The Halifax-born forward, who played his junior rugby for Siddal, has already made his first-team debut back in 2022 and has since gone on to become a mainstay in Burgess’ forward pack. Holroyd believes the guidance and confidence instilled by the coaching staff has been instrumental in his development.
“Sam, Rich (Marshall), Glees (Martin Gleeson) just tell me to do my thing. They wanted me to go and play how I play, which is being aggressive, running hard and tackling hard,” Holroyd said. “And that confidence has really helped me grow as a player.”
Burgess, who has made no secret of his desire to give youth a chance, has praised Holroyd’s attitude and willingness to learn.
“He’s been really consistent. His improvement has been astronomical really. He’s a great lad to coach and just wants to get better,” the Warrington boss commented.
The challenge now for Burgess and his staff will be to manage Holroyd’s workload, as the youngster has played more games than initially planned.
“We need to manage him properly. We didn’t plan for him to play this many games but it’s been great for him,” Burgess explained.
Holroyd’s impressive performances have been rewarded with a long-term contract extension, keeping him at the Halliwell Jones Stadium until at least the end of 2027. Burgess believes the back-rower has “great potential” and is his “kind of bloke” due to his attitude and playing style.
