Semi-Finals Confirmed for Prestigious Challenge Cup
On May 18th and 19th, the semi-finals of the prestigious Challenge Cup will take place, with the officiating teams now confirmed. Experienced referee Chris Kendall has been appointed to oversee the tantalizing clash between Hull KR and Wigan Warriors at the Eco-Power Stadium in Doncaster. Given the high-profile nature of this BBC-televised encounter, video referees will be in operation – a contrast to previous rounds that lacked comprehensive coverage.
To reach this stage, the Robins comfortably dispatched Salford Red Devils and Leigh Leopards at their Craven Park home, while the Warriors demolished Sheffield Eagles at the DW Stadium before overcoming Castleford Tigers on the road. However, both sides enter the semi-final with differing recent fortunes, as Hull KR aim to bounce back from a disappointing defeat to Warrington Wolves, while Wigan cruised to a 48-6 victory over Huddersfield Giants last time out, despite Liam Byrne’s first-tackle sin-binning. Intriguingly, the two teams met in the league just last month, with the Robins emerging 26-10 victors.
Warrington Wolves vs. Huddersfield Giants
In the other semi-final showdown, Huddersfield Giants host Warrington Wolves at the Totally Wicked Stadium in St Helens. Huddersfield pulled off a stunning 34-6 upset over Catalans Dragons in the previous round, while Warrington dispatched reigning champions St Helens 31-8. Liam Moore will be the referee for this encounter, with Ben Thaler as the video official. Interestingly, Liam’s younger brother, Aaron Moore, will serve as the reserve referee.
With no Super League fixtures this week, some familiar faces will oversee action in the RFL Championship. James Vella will take charge as Bradford Bulls welcome Sheffield Eagles, who are enjoying an impressive season and have booked their spot in the 1895 Cup final at Wembley. Elsewhere, Liam Rush will officiate the clash between York Knights and Halifax Panthers at the York Community Stadium.
“The semi-finals of the Challenge Cup are always highly anticipated, and this year’s matchups promise to be thrilling. Fans can expect to see some of the best rugby league talent on display as these teams battle for a place in the final at Wembley.”
