Rugby League Recap: Disciplinary Concerns Linger after Challenge Cup Quarterfinals
Despite the absence of Super League action over the weekend, teams will still be wary of potential disciplinary punishment following the thrilling Challenge Cup Quarterfinal matches. While the majority of the eight participating Super League sides managed to avoid any yellow cards, the disciplinary process is expected to be busy this week as the Match Review Panel examines several incidents.
Saturday’s action saw Hull KR knock out last year’s Challenge Cup champions Leigh, while Huddersfield Giants pulled off a shock victory over Catalans Dragons in France. The Hull KR vs. Leigh game was a rematch of the 2022 final, which saw Elliot Minchella sent to the sin bin. This time, referee Chris Kendall kept his cards in his pocket throughout Hull KR‘s 26-14 win.
In Perpignan, however, the Catalans Dragons found themselves on the wrong end of a 34-6 defeat to Huddersfield. During the match, center Arthur Romano was sent to the sin bin, and the French club will be concerned about the possibility of further punishment.
On Sunday, Wigan Warriors delivered a dominant performance, thrashing Castleford Tigers 60-6 to book their place in the semifinals. Liam Marshall scored four tries, and Abbas Miski added two, as Wigan ran riot. The only concern for the Warriors was the loss of Willie Isa to injury.
The final quarterfinal clash pitted St Helens against Warrington Wolves. After a tight first half, Warrington edged ahead 7-6, but the second half belonged to St Helens, who scored four tries to secure a 31-8 victory and progress to the semifinals.
“While the weekend’s action produced some thrilling rugby league, the focus now turns to the disciplinary proceedings, particularly surrounding the incident involving Arthur Romano of the Catalans Dragons.”
