Less Than a Week After Surprise Appointment, Richie Myler’s Role as Hull FC’s Director of Rugby Comes Under Scrutiny
Less than a week after Hull FC’s surprise appointment of Richie Myler as their new Director of Rugby, the decision has prompted questions and scrutiny from fans and pundits alike.
Sky Sports pundit Jon Wilkin, a former St Helens captain who hails from Hull, was among the first to voice his skepticism, describing the move as “weird” on Sky Sports News’ The Verdict program. Wilkin has now elaborated on his initial comments, explaining, “> I didn’t realize that Richie Myler had an appetite to get involved and take on such a big role so quickly. It’s weird from the public’s perspective to see someone so inexperienced in that job function tasked with turning Hull FC around, which is clearly needed.”
Myler, an 18-year veteran of professional rugby league, has cited his time at Leeds Rhinos and experience learning from Gary Hetherington as key factors behind his credentials. However, speculation has begun to swirl around potential investor involvement in his appointment.
Hull FC chairman Adam Pearson has confirmed the club is in discussions with investors who could provide much-needed financial input. Sky Sports’ Brian Carney hinted that Myler’s partner’s father, Leeds Rhinos president Andrew Thirkill, may be the wealthy backer behind this potential investment.
Carney drew comparisons to the “pay driver” model seen in Formula One, where wealthy investors secure seats for their relatives. Wilkin acknowledged that “family businesses work like that” and the recruitment of trusted, loyal individuals is common practice.
If the speculation around Thirkill’s involvement and a potential influx of investment proves accurate, it would certainly “paint the picture in color” regarding Myler’s unexpected appointment, as Wilkin stated. However, the true nature of the decision-making process at Hull FC remains to be seen as the club navigates this pivotal juncture.
