Rugby League Results: Former Wigan Star Trent Barrett Appointed Interim Coach of Parramatta Eels
In a surprising turn of events, the Parramatta Eels have parted ways with head coach Brad Arthur, with former Wigan Warriors star Trent Barrett taking over as interim coach for the remainder of the 2024 NRL season.
The decision comes after the Eels suffered a 48-16 defeat at the hands of the Melbourne Storm during Magic Round. Parramatta currently sits in 14th place on the NRL ladder, having won just three out of their 10 games in the 2024 campaign.
Arthur had been the Eels’ head coach since 2014, winning 135 of his 258 games in charge, a win percentage of 52%. However, the Parramatta board and CEO felt that the team’s progress had stalled, and it was time for the club to “go in a new direction” in their pursuit of a premiership.
Barrett, who became a fan favorite during his two seasons with the Wigan Warriors in Super League between 2007 and 2008, was previously an assistant to Arthur. He will now take the reins of the Eels for the remainder of the 2024 season, as the club looks to appoint a long-term head coach for 2025 and beyond.
Barrett enjoyed a distinguished playing career, making over 300 appearances for the Illawarra Steelers, St George Illawarra Dragons, Wigan, and Cronulla Sharks. He also earned 15 caps for the Australian national team and played 11 games for New South Wales in the State of Origin arena.
The Eels’ statement acknowledged Barrett’s previous experience as a head coach in the NRL, having taken charge of the Manly Sea Eagles (2016-2018) and the Canterbury Bulldogs (2021-2022).
As the Parramatta Eels look to turn their season around and secure a spot in the finals, the appointment of Trent Barrett as interim coach will undoubtedly be a talking point among rugby league enthusiasts. The club has promised to provide further updates as they move forward in their search for a permanent head coach for the 2025 season and beyond.
