Parramatta Eels Head Coach Brad Arthur Sacked, Super League’s Steve McNamara Potential NRL Replacement

Parramatta Eels Sack Head Coach Brad Arthur, Super League’s Steve McNamara Linked to NRL Move

In a swift decision, the struggling Parramatta Eels have parted ways with head coach Brad Arthur, effective immediately. The news has reignited persistent rumors that one of Super League’s top coaches may make the switch to Australia’s NRL.

The Eels have endured a slow start to the season, currently sitting 14th in the league table with just 3 wins from their opening 10 matches. Their poor performance is evident in their league-second worst points difference of -103.

Arthur’s tenure came to an end following the team’s 48-16 humiliation against the Melbourne Storm during the NRL’s Magic Round. Despite Arthur’s attempts to defend his position after the game, the Eels have acted decisively in removing him from the role he has held since 2014, which included guiding the team to one NRL Grand Final.

Steve McNamara Emerges as Potential Replacement

Now, Super League’s Steve McNamara has emerged as a leading candidate to replace Arthur at Parramatta. McNamara, the current Catalans Dragons head coach, was previously linked to the Eels’ job in 2013, though he ultimately remained in Super League. However, a recent article in The Roar has touted McNamara as the “perfect replacement” for Arthur, praising his impressive coaching credentials.

While McNamara signed a new deal with Catalans in February to keep him in Perpignan until the end of the 2026 season, the opportunity to coach in the NRL could prove tempting, and a genuine offer may test his commitment.

Trent Barrett Appointed Interim Head Coach

In the interim, former Wigan Warriors star Trent Barrett has been appointed as the Eels’ interim head coach for the remainder of the 2024 season. The club has stated that they will take steps to find a long-term replacement for the 2025 season and beyond.

Barrett, who earned a spot in the Super League dream team in his first year with Wigan, has previous head coaching experience with the Manly Sea Eagles and Canterbury Bulldogs. He will look to steady the ship at Parramatta as they aim to turn their season around.
