The upcoming Pacific Championships finals promise an action-packed weekend, with four thrilling matches across different competitions featuring some of the world’s top men’s and women’s rugby league players. Notably, ten Super League stars will be taking part, including a remarkable eight donning the colors of Papua New Guinea.
Tonga vs. Australia in the Pacific Cup Final
Tonga, who finished second in the Pacific Cup group stage, will face world champions Australia in the top-tier final. Huddersfield Giants’ Tui Lolohea, a 30-year-old half-back with 21 caps for Mate Ma’a Tonga, will represent the Pacific nation.
New Zealand vs. Papua New Guinea in the Pacific Bowl
In the Pacific Bowl promotion/relegation final, New Zealand – who finished bottom of their group – will battle it out with champions Papua New Guinea. Hull KR’s Peta Hiku, a 32-year-old veteran back with 19 New Zealand caps, is the sole Super League representative for the Kiwis.
Papua New Guinea’s Strong Super League Presence
However, the real focus will be on the strong Papua New Guinean contingent, with eight of their squad members plying their trade in the British game’s top flight. Castleford Tigers trio Liam Horne, Sylvester Namo, and Judah Rimbu, who recently signed a two-year deal with the club, will all feature for the Kumuls.
Warrington Wolves’ Rodrick Tai and Dan Russell, the latter on the reserves list, are also part of the PNG squad, while Leigh Leopards’ Lachlan Lam, the team’s captain, will start in the halves. Salford Red Devils’ Nene Macdonald, with 20 international appearances, will line up at full-back, and Hull KR’s Rhyse Martin, the team’s captain, returns after missing the previous match.
This weekend’s Pacific Championships finals promise to be a thrilling showcase of rugby league talent, with a strong Super League presence, particularly from the Papua New Guinean contingent.
