Oldham Sign Rugby League Star Iain Thornley for Championship Campaign

Experienced Championship Newcomers Oldham Secure Signing of Decorated Rugby League Star Iain Thornley

Oldham, the newcomers to the Championship, have bolstered their squad with the signing of two-time Challenge Cup winner and 2013 Super League Grand Final champion Iain Thornley. The 33-year-old centre joins the club on a two-year deal following his departure from Wakefield Trinity.

Thornley’s 2024 campaign with Wakefield proved to be a successful one, as he contributed seven tries in 24 appearances to help the club secure a clean sweep of the Championship Grand Final, League Leaders’ Shield, and 1895 Cup. His wealth of experience and proven track record of success will undoubtedly be valuable assets to Oldham as they make their return to the second tier in 2025.

The 6ft 6in outside-back has an impressive resume, having helped his hometown club Wigan Warriors win a Super League and Challenge Cup double in 2013, as well as lifting the Challenge Cup with Catalans Dragons in 2022. Oldham’s head coach Sean Long is confident that Thornley’s winning mentality and work ethic will be crucial in establishing a strong team culture at Boundary Park.

“Iain has won a lot and is a winner,” said Long. “I want a winning culture and winning mentality with good people who want to work hard and put the team first, and he fits that.”

Thornley expressed his excitement about the move, stating:

“I want to be part of clubs that have ambitions. At Wakefield, I was part of a club that won all three trophies and got promoted. Oldham want to do something similar, it will be stepping stones each year, but hopefully, we can have a good year next year.”

With the signings of experienced duo Adam Milner and Gil Dudson already in place, Oldham have made a statement of intent as they prepare for their return to the Championship in 2025. Thornley’s addition to the squad will undoubtedly bolster their chances of success in the upcoming season.
