Experienced Playmaker Nu Brown Joins NRL Side St George Illawarra Dragons
Just days after his release from Hull FC, New Zealand international Nu Brown has confirmed his future by signing with the St George Illawarra Dragons in the NRL. Following the sacking of Tony Smith as Hull FC’s head coach on Friday, 12th, the club announced on Saturday, 13th, that both Brown and Tex Hoy had been released with immediate effect, cutting short their time in England.
While Hoy’s departure was attributed to a failure to seize his opportunities, Brown’s release was on more personal grounds. As Hull FC chairman Adam Pearson explained, Brown’s wife’s father is seriously ill, prompting the player’s decision to return home and join her. Brown himself acknowledged this, stating that he would not be playing for another Super League club, refusing to “collect a paycheck” without the commitment to the game.
The NRL’s St George Illawarra Dragons have now moved swiftly to secure Brown’s services, confirming his signing until the end of the 2024 season. Head coach Shane Flanagan expressed his delight at acquiring a player of Brown’s caliber, highlighting the 29-year-old’s versatility and experience, which he believes will add significant value to the squad.
“We are excited to welcome Nu to the Dragons. His experience and versatility will be a great asset to our squad.”
- Shane Flanagan, Head Coach, St George Illawarra Dragons
This move marks the end of Brown’s Super League stint, as he embarks on a new challenge in the NRL, reuniting with Flanagan, whom he previously worked with during his time at the Cronulla Sharks.
