NRL Club Makes “Quiet Approach” for St Helens Star Moses Mbye
In a surprising development, an unnamed NRL club has reportedly made a “quiet approach” about the availability of St Helens star Moses Mbye ahead of the 2025 season. The 31-year-old Brisbane-born player has been with the Saints for the last 18 months, joining from the NRL outfit St George Illawarra Dragons in July 2023.
Mbye, who has scored five tries in 35 appearances for Paul Wellens’ side, has already amassed nearly 200 first-grade appearances in the NRL, playing for Canterbury Bulldogs, Wests Tigers, and St George Illawarra. He has also represented Queensland in the 2019 State of Origin series and played for Australia’s Prime Minister’s XIII and an NRL All Stars side.
According to a report published in the Australian outlet The Daily Telegraph’s “Saint, Sinner, Shoosh” feature, the NRL club based in Sydney has expressed interest in acquiring Mbye, who still has a year left on his Saints contract. Any potential transfer would likely come with a substantial fee.
However, there are no indications that Mbye wishes to return to Australia, nor that St Helens are willing to let him go, as the utility player is expected to be an integral part of the squad’s new-look spine at the Totally Wicked Stadium in 2025.
The Super League side has already lost homegrown playmaker Lewis Dodd to the NRL’s South Sydney Rabbitohs and veteran winger Tommy Makinson to Catalans Dragons during this off-season. Additionally, Sione Mata’utia has retired and returned to Australia after four seasons with the club.
