Rugby League News: Matty Russell’s Impressive Club Career Showcase
Matty Russell’s recent move to Leeds Rhinos marks his third Super League club this season, but the Scotland international has now represented an impressive seven top-flight teams throughout his career.
The versatile 30-year-old, who can play both winger and fullback, first debuted in Super League for Wigan Warriors back in 2012, scoring three tries in just two appearances. Since then, Russell has gone on to feature for Hull FC, Warrington Wolves, Toronto Wolfpack, Leigh Centurions, Toulouse Olympique, and now Leeds Rhinos, the latter on an initial two-month loan deal.
Russell’s extensive club journey is matched by only a select few players in the Super League era.
Warrington-born Gareth O’Brien and veteran Danny Tickle have both represented seven Super League teams in their careers, while Hull’s Tommy Lee stands alone as the only player to have donned the shirt of eight different clubs at the top level.
At 30 years old, the 13-time Scotland international is now just two appearances shy of 200 career club games. With a new challenge at Leeds Rhinos, Russell will look to add to his tally and cement his place among the most well-traveled players in modern rugby league history.
