Matty Nicholson Emerges as Key Figure in Warrington Wolves’ Forward Pack
At just 20 years old, Matty Nicholson has quickly established himself as a crucial member of Warrington Wolves’ formidable forward pack. The Halifax-born back-rower joined the club midway through the 2022 season from rivals Wigan Warriors and has since gone on to earn his England debut, featuring in last year’s resounding 64-0 victory over France.
Despite dealing with a disrupted pre-season due to injury, Nicholson has firmly cemented his place as a key player in Sam Burgess’ squad. His tenacious defensive work has been a driving force, with the Yorkshireman averaging an incredible 38 tackles per game in Super League, including a remarkable 150 tackles in his last three outings.
“Sometimes he moves around like he is a bit older than 20, that’s all!” Burgess remarked with a hint of disbelief.
But Nicholson’s contributions extend far beyond his defensive prowess. The young forward has also impressed with ball in hand, averaging 8.39 metres per carry so far in the 2024 season.
Burgess, the Warrington boss, has been effusive in his praise for Nicholson’s performances, acknowledging the player’s maturity and consistency that belie his tender age. The Warrington coach also highlighted Nicholson’s ability to adapt, noting his value in both the middle and edge positions.
“In today’s game it’s a valuable asset to be able to play both,” Burgess said. “He’s a valuable asset to the team so we’re glad he is finding a bit of form.”
With Nicholson’s standout displays, Warrington will be looking to the young forward to continue his impressive run of form as they prepare to take on Hull KR in Round 11 of the Super League at the Halliwell Jones Stadium on Thursday night.
