Rugby League Results: Matt Moylan’s Super League Surge
After a shaky start, Matt Moylan’s Super League career has hit the ground running in recent weeks for the Leigh Leopards. While it may have been unfair to expect an instant impact from the player who had never before competed in England, Moylan is now beginning to showcase the talent that made him a mainstay in the NRL for nearly a decade.
Moylan’s Upturn in Form
Moylan’s upturn in form has coincided with a spell at fullback, filling in for the absent Gareth O’Brien. Even when paired alongside Lachlan Lam in the halves, the Australian has been dominating games. Interestingly, Moylan is achieving this with less ball possession, showcasing an increased ability to puncture the line.
Over his last five games, Moylan has provided seven line break assists, nearly matching his total of six from the first eight matches. He has also managed three direct line breaks in the past four games, after just two in his first nine outings. Moylan’s running threat has grown, with his average meters-per-game rising from 117 to 150 in this recent stretch.
Improved Statistics
The numbers highlight Moylan’s transformation, with 25 tackle breaks in the last five games compared to just 11 in the opening eight. His pass-per-run ratio has also halved, as the half-back opts to run with the ball more frequently, to great reward for both him and the Leigh Leopards.
“Matt’s season has taken off since he’s been at fullback,” Leigh coach Adrian Lam told Love Rugby League. “I always said it would take around 10 games for him to settle – that’s the time it takes an import player.”
As Moylan and Leigh prepare to face Hull KR on Friday night, the former Kangaroos man is emerging as one of the most threatening and important players in the Super League competition.
