Lewis Dodd Set to Join South Sydney Rabbitohs, but St Helens’ Alex Walmsley Opts to Stay Put
In a significant move, reports suggest that St Helens half-back Lewis Dodd will make the switch to the NRL’s South Sydney Rabbitohs for the 2025 season. However, one of Dodd’s current teammates, prop forward Alex Walmsley, has revealed why he decided to knock back any advances from the Australian league.
Walmsley Commits to St Helens
Walmsley, who has recently signed a new deal to keep him at St Helens until the end of 2026, explained that his decision to remain in England was an “easy” one, as he is simply “enjoying [his] rugby.” The 34-year-old is set to likely finish his career as a Saint, while the 22-year-old Dodd looks to test himself in the NRL.
“When it came to re-signing, the key factor was my happiness and whether I was enjoying the sport. There were opportunities to earn more money elsewhere, but my contentment at St Helens took precedence.”
- Alex Walmsley
Early NRL Interest, but Timing Wasn’t Right
Interestingly, Walmsley revealed that the first NRL offer came as early as 2015, when he was establishing himself as a regular first-team player for the Saints. However, he felt that at that stage, he was still “learning the game,” and the timing didn’t feel right to make the move.
Proud Moment: World Club Challenge Victory
Despite never having played in the NRL, Walmsley identified the recent World Club Challenge victory over Penrith Panthers as his proudest moment in a St Helens shirt. He expressed his delight at going into the Panthers’ backyard and achieving success, which demonstrated that the Saints can not only compete with but also defeat the best teams from the southern hemisphere.
As Dodd prepares for a new challenge in Australia, Walmsley’s decision to remain loyal to St Helens and continue his career in the Super League reflects the diverse paths that players choose in their professional journeys.
