Leigh Leopards Roar Into Super League Play-Off Semi-Finals After Gritty Win Over Salford Red Devils
The Leigh Leopards secured a hard-fought 14-6 victory over Salford Red Devils on Friday night, booking their spot in the Super League play-off semi-finals.
Heading into the break with a 2-0 deficit, the visitors sprung into action in the second half. Quick-fire tries from Josh Charnley and Gareth O’Brien, along with a conversion from Matt Moylan, put the Leopards 10-2 up. Edwin Ipape then powered over for a try of his own, extending their lead to 12 points.
“Hooker Edwin Ipape was the standout performer, with his dynamic display cementing his status as the best in the league in that position. His remarkable try-scoring burst and assist for O’Brien showcased his world-class abilities.”
Salford managed a late consolation through Ethan Ryan, but Leigh held on for a historic win, progressing to the semi-finals for the first time in the club’s history.
The Leopards’ remarkable turnaround this season has been nothing short of remarkable. Promoted from the Championship at the end of the 2022 campaign, Adrian Lam’s side were beaten in the play-off eliminators a year ago. Now, they stand just 80 minutes away from a maiden Old Trafford appearance.
Despite the disappointment of their campaign ending, it has been a hugely positive year for Salford. Embracing the underdog tag, Paul Rowley’s side secured a top-four finish on a limited budget, with several players earning Dream Team selections.
The match was not without its controversies, as the lack of action taken against Salford’s Tim Lafai for his collision with Frankie Halton, which resulted in the Leopards forward failing a HIA, drew scrutiny from the Sky Sports pundits.
Leigh’s progression has come at a cost, however, with back-rower Kai O’Donnell’s availability in doubt due to abdominal issues, and Halton and the injured Josh Charnley potentially set to miss the semi-final.
