Leigh Leopards Facing Uphill Battle in Super League
In their first season back in Super League, the Leigh Leopards defied expectations, winning the Challenge Cup and securing a playoff spot. However, the 2023 campaign has proven more challenging for the Leopards, as they have managed just one win in their opening seven games.
Recently, Warrington Wolves narrowly defeated Leigh, leaving them well adrift of the playoff positions. Vocal Sky pundit Jon Wilkin has weighed in on Leigh’s playoff hopes, suggesting that with 20 games remaining, they would need to win 15 to have any chance of replicating last year’s heroics. Wilkin believes the absence of key players like John Asiata and Edwin Ipape has been instrumental in Leigh’s struggles this season.
Despite the team’s recent setbacks, there are grounds for Leigh optimism. Wilkin acknowledges that the impending return of Asiata and Ipape could give the Leopards a “puncher’s chance” of mounting a playoff charge. However, Leigh will need to start winning soon, with crucial matches against Castleford, Salford, and Huddersfield on the horizon.
