Leigh Leopards Look to Strengthen Squad with New Signings
(Leigh, England – June 20, 2023) Leigh Leopards head coach Adrian Lam has revealed the club’s plans to bolster their squad with new signings in the coming months. After a disappointing start to the 2023 campaign, following a successful season last year, the Leopards are determined to turn their fortunes around.
Lam acknowledged that the team has faced numerous injury setbacks, leading to a depleted roster in the past. However, with many of their key players now back, the focus is on gelling the team and addressing the identified “weaknesses” in the current squad.
“We are in a position at the moment where we’ve identified where a few weaknesses may be in our current squad and we want to change the way that that looks,” Lam stated during a press conference this week. The coach hinted at more signings to be announced by the end of the year, while also confirming that some players will be leaving the club.
The departure of Tommy Briscoe to Hull FC and the impending move of Leigh captain John Asiata to join Briscoe next year have been widely reported. There have also been rumors surrounding the potential move of Lachlan Lam back to Australia.
Despite the high turnover of players in recent years, Lam emphasized the Leopards’ long-term vision of building a team primarily composed of “Leigh lads born and bred.” The club’s recently acquired Academy Licence from the RFL, effective from 2025, will provide a pathway for local talent to develop within the organization.
“Our endeavour will be to make sure that we bring as many young players of the local clubs within the Leigh area into our scholarship and into our academy and hopefully most of the team in four or five years will be built around players from Leigh,” Lam explained.
While Lam remained cautious about committing to a specific number of new signings, he assured fans that the club’s owner, Derek Beaumont, is determined to utilize the full salary cap to secure the necessary players to shape the team’s future.
