Leigh Leopards’ Playoff Push: Key Players Return for Second-Half Surge

Leigh Leopards Prepare for Second-Half Surge with Key Player Reinforcements

As the Leigh Leopards emerge from the mid-season break, they know they must win potentially nine of their remaining 13 games to secure a playoff spot. However, head coach Adrian Lam has revealed that the club is set to welcome back three star players, which should significantly boost their push for postseason contention.

The Leopards had a slow start to the 2023 season, managing just one win in their opening seven games, but they now find themselves just seven points adrift of sixth place. A defeat to Leeds Rhinos just before the international break was a significant setback, and their return fixture against the unbeaten-at-home Wigan Warriors at the DW Stadium on Friday night will be no easy task.

Nonetheless, Lam is confident that the squad’s health is the best it has been all year, with captain John Asiata, forward Robbie Mulhern, and full-back Gaz O’Brien all expected to return. The coach also confirmed that prop Tom Amone has cleared the return-to-play protocol after a HIA against Leeds Rhinos.

“The key players are obviously our forward pack with John Asiata and Robbie Mulhern. We’ll give John up till kick-off to be right, and that decision will be made right at the last minute, but Gaz O’Brien and Robbie Mulhern will definitely be playing.”

While Lam acknowledged that match fitness may be lacking for the returning players, he believes the extended break has allowed them to work on their recovery and conditioning.

A victory over the Wigan Warriors would be a significant boost for the Leigh Leopards as they look to capitalize on their reinforced squad and make a strong push for the playoffs in the second half of the season.
