Adrian Lam Optimistic as Leigh Leopards Regain Key Players for Wigan Derby
Leigh Leopards head coach Adrian Lam has provided an upbeat injury update ahead of the team’s crucial local derby against Wigan Warriors this Friday. Speaking after their previous match, Lam confirmed that several key players will be available for selection, boosting the Leopards’ chances as they aim to solidify their playoff push in the second half of the season.
Lam revealed that half-back Gareth O’Brien, who failed a Head Injury Assessment (HIA) in the last game, and prop Robbie Mulhern, who was sidelined with a calf issue, will both be fit to feature against the Warriors. Furthermore, influential captain John Asiata, who has been nursing a hamstring problem, also has a chance of playing in Friday’s fixture at The Brick Community Stadium.
“We’ve got a few faces back into consideration for this weekend so that’s pretty exciting,” said Lam. “I know it’ll take a few weeks for the players that do come back to find a bit of form, but the squad looks probably the healthiest it’s been all season. John Asiata, Robbie Mulhern, and Gaz O’Brien will be added to the squad.”
While Lam expects his returning stars to need some time to regain full match sharpness, he is encouraged by their availability and believes they will play a crucial role in Leigh’s push for the playoffs. The Leopards boss also provided an update on the fitness of Oli Holmes and Ben McNamara, who remain sidelined due to their respective niggles.
“The key players are obviously our forward pack with John Asiata and Robbie Mulhern,” Lam added. “We are going to give John up until kick-off to be right, and a decision will be made (on him) right at the last minute, but Gaz O’Brien and Robbie Mulhern will definitely be playing.”
With the returns of these influential players, Lam and the Leigh Leopards will be hoping to secure a vital win against their local rivals Wigan Warriors and continue their pursuit of a playoff spot in the 2023 rugby league season.
