Leigh Leopards Rugby League Coach Remains Upbeat Despite Defeat to Wigan Warriors
Leigh Leopards rugby league coach Adrian Lam insists he remains optimistic despite his side’s 40-12 defeat to Wigan Warriors in the Battle of the Borough on Thursday night.
The Leopards succumbed to a heavy loss against their local rivals Wigan in Round 7 of the Super League, having to play without key players Edwin Ipape, John Asiata, Tom Amone, Robbie Mulhern and Tom Briscoe, who are all sidelined with injuries.
Leigh have endured a challenging start to the 2024 rugby league season due to their injury woes, but Lam says he remains “positive” despite the heavy scoreline against the reigning world champion Wigan Warriors.
“I thought in patches, including the start of the game, I was really happy with what we did and it felt like there was a lot of last year in that as well which is what we’re striving to get to with so many new faces and positional changes every week,” Lam said in his post-match press conference.
The Leopards boss praised his team’s effort, acknowledging that they were unable to maintain it for the full 80 minutes, while also crediting the clinical nature of the Wigan Warriors, who capitalized on their chances.
“They are an opportune team, if there’s a 50-50 chance they take it and score, I thought that’s what they did tonight. They were quite clinical with taking their chances so we’ve got to give them credit for that but I was proud of the boys for hanging in there for long periods,” Lam added.
Despite the defeat, the Leigh Leopards coach remains confident in his team’s ability to turn things around, emphasizing the need to stay positive and united during this challenging period.
The Leopards now have a nine-day turnaround as they shift their focus to retaining their Rugby League Challenge Cup crown, with a quarter-final match against Hull KR at Sewell Group Craven Park next Saturday.
Lam’s side will be looking to bounce back and showcase their resilience as they aim to defend their title and continue their quest for success in the 2024 rugby league season.
