Leigh Leopards Coach Analyzes Narrow Defeat to Wigan Warriors

Leigh Leopards coach Adrian Lam reflects on narrow defeat against Wigan Warriors

In the aftermath of Leigh Leopards’ 24-6 loss to Wigan Warriors, head coach Adrian Lam addressed several key talking points in his post-match press conference.

Lam was pleased with the returns of influential trio John Asiata, Robbie Mulhern, and Gareth O’Brien, who made their long-awaited comebacks in the Battle of the Borough clash. The coach was particularly impressed by the performances of powerhouse prop Tom Amone and the try-saving tackle from Bevan French early in the game.

“John Asiata, Robbie Mulhern and Gaz O’Brien have all been out for a while, so it’s great to have them back in the team,” Lam said. “Tom Amone was awesome, and Bevan French’s try-saving tackle in the opening stages was crucial.”

While Asiata was only expected to play around 20 minutes, Lam opted to extend his playing time as the veteran forward continues his recovery. “We just don’t want to overdo it with him, as he’s been out for a very long time and isn’t quite 100% yet,” the coach explained.

Lam also addressed the second appearance of new signing Aaron Pene, acknowledging that it will take the NRL recruit “six to 10 weeks to settle in” with the Leopards’ setup.

Despite the defeat, the Leigh boss remains confident in his side’s ability to force their way into the top six, suggesting that “one or two teams will buckle” in the coming weeks. Lam believes his team would have beaten “any other team in the competition” with their performance against Wigan.

The Leopards now return home to the newly-renovated Leigh Sports Village for three consecutive games, and Lam is “looking forward to” building momentum on their own turf after a grueling run of away fixtures.
