Rugby League News: Leigh Leopards and Salford Red Devils Awarded Elite Academy Licenses
The rugby league community has celebrated a significant milestone as Leigh Leopards and Salford Red Devils have both been granted three-year elite academy licenses. This achievement is the result of their successful proposals, which have ticked another box in the IMG-led restructuring of the sport.
The granting of an elite license offers these clubs a greater chance of developing their young prospects into first-team players. For Leigh, this is particularly meaningful, as it has been some time since they have been able to bring players through their youth system. Currently, only one academy product, hometown hero Frankie Halton, features in their side this year.
Halton’s journey is a testament to the importance of youth development. After spending time in amateur rugby and working his way back up to Super League with Hull KR, he has returned to the club, now known as the Leigh Leopards.
Salford Red Devils have also seen the value of nurturing their own talent. Marc Sneyd and Chris Hankinson, who have become integral parts of the Salford squad, are examples of players who came through the club’s youth system and have made successful returns in recent years.
Leigh owner Derek Beaumont expressed his delight at the news, stating that it has always been his dream to build a successful academy, and this decision provides the opportunity to continue that pursuit. He emphasized the importance of fully connecting the junior and professional ranks within the club, as well as the potential for local people to be involved in various roles, from coaching to medical staff.
