Rhinos Seek Consistency Amid Pressure on Head Coach
The Leeds Rhinos’ 2023 Super League campaign has been a mixed bag, with some impressive wins followed by heavy defeats. However, the team found cause for optimism after a comfortable victory over the Castleford Tigers in their latest outing.
Despite the Rhinos’ strong performance, which saw them comfortably overcome the Tigers, the margin of victory could have been even greater had they been more clinical in front of goal. Leeds wasted several promising positions that could have added further gloss to their win at Headingley.
The win provided some relief for head coach Rohan Smith, who had faced mounting pressure and questions about his future. This was exacerbated by the club’s announcement that a Sporting Director would be appointed to oversee the team’s operations.
“They need wins, and they need their coach to deliver,” Carney said.
Currently occupying the sixth and final play-off spot in the Super League table, the Rhinos will be hoping to put together a run of positive results in their upcoming matches against Hull FC, Leigh Leopards, and London Broncos.
However, fellow Sky Sports analyst Jodie Cunningham believes the Rhinos should have gelled faster, given their high-profile signings in the off-season. “You can’t say that things are still bedding in. They’re just not performing, and the pressure really is on Rohan now,” Cunningham said.
Ultimately, as pointed out by Sam Tomkins, the Leeds fans will not be satisfied with the appointment of a Sporting Director alone. They want to see tangible improvements on the field, with the team’s star players delivering consistent performances week in, week out.
