Rhyse Martin Makes History for Leeds Rhinos
On Sunday afternoon, Leeds Rhinos’ Rhyse Martin etched his name into the club’s history books, becoming just the fifth player in the modern era to surpass the impressive milestone of 1,000 points for the Rhinos during their win over London Broncos.
The Papua New Guinean forward, who joined Leeds in June 2019 following his departure from NRL outfit Canterbury Bulldogs, went into the trip to the capital sitting on 986 points for the club. By the 35th minute at Plough Lane, Martin had secured the 14 points needed to reach four figures, scoring two tries and converting them both, while also slotting a penalty.
“Martin’s first four points for Leeds came on his full debut in July 2019, when he crossed the line against Hull KR.”
The Kumuls star also contributed eight points in the 2020 Challenge Cup final victory over Salford Red Devils and amassed a further eight points in last year’s Grand Final defeat to St Helens.
With 1,006 points to his name from 129 appearances, comprising 39 tries and 425 goals, Martin has joined an exclusive club of Leeds Rhinos legends. Prior to his milestone achievement, only four players in the modern era had reached and surpassed the 1,000-point mark for the West Yorkshire outfit:
- Danny McGuire (1,075)
- Rob Burrow (1,103)
- Iestyn Harris (1,455)
- The legendary Kevin Sinfield (3,967)
Despite London Broncos’ late comeback to level the scores at 20-20 and force the game into Golden Point extra time, Leeds emerged victorious, with Brodie Croft’s one-pointer securing a 21-20 win for the Rhinos.
Leeds will welcome Hull FC to Headingley next week, before traveling to Wigan Warriors and Hull KR in their final two regular-season Super League fixtures. If the Rhinos fail to make the playoffs, Martin’s final game for the club could come against his future employers, Hull KR.
