Leeds Rhinos Appoint New Sporting Director, Blease Backs Smith as Head Coach
Leeds Rhinos have appointed Ian Blease as their new Sporting Director, and the experienced administrator has expressed his full backing for current head coach Rohan Smith. Blease, who has departed Salford Red Devils after a 20-year tenure, has stressed that he will work closely with Smith to map out a long-term future for the Rhinos.
Inheriting a Leeds squad struggling in mid-table and in danger of missing out on the Super League play-offs, Blease acknowledged that he will conduct a thorough review of the club’s operations. However, he has emphasized his intention to support Smith, stating, “He’s a good guy. Rohan is doing the job to the best of his ability and I’ll support him on that.”
“Yes,” Blease responded when asked directly if Smith has his full backing. This comes as a clear statement of confidence in the current head coach, who has faced increasing external pressure amid Leeds’ disappointing campaign.
Blease also addressed the speculation surrounding a potential move for Salford’s head coach, Paul Rowley, to follow him to Headingley. The 59-year-old dismissed such suggestions, stating, “It’s for you guys to put it on paper, and speculate about. It would be unfair for me to comment on things.”
As Blease settles into his new role, his priority will be to work closely with Smith and the Rhinos squad to turn around their fortunes and secure a spot in the Super League play-offs.
