Leeds Rhinos Interim Coach Chev Walker Addresses Future and Player Updates

Interim Coach Chev Walker Addresses Leeds Rhinos’ Recent Developments

As the Leeds Rhinos prepare to face London Broncos on Saturday, interim coach Chev Walker met with the media to discuss a range of topics, including the club’s search for a permanent replacement for Rohan Smith and the team’s current injury situation.

During the press conference, Walker addressed the Warrington Wolves loan deal for Matty Russell, confirming that it is highly unlikely the agreement will be renewed when it ends next Wednesday. “When he came in, we were down to the bare bones, and we’ve had players return and consistently training, so I don’t think it’d be fair on both parties,” said Walker. “He’d be waiting again for an opportunity, but he’s done a good job, come with a great attitude and added to the group. But opportunities haven’t been there, so he’ll be returning.”

On the injury front, the news was mixed for the Rhinos. While James Bentley is inching closer to a return to full-contact training, prop Tom Holroyd faces an extended spell on the sidelines following a concussion. “It’s going to be a period. He’s not going to play any time soon. We’ve got to leave that to the medical team and support him through this period,” Walker revealed.

However, there was a positive update on the recovery of young back Max Simpson, who has been sidelined since suffering an ACL injury during pre-season. “Max has been unbelievable in his recovery. He’s had a few setbacks but never wavered. We’ve took our time with him and made sure what he needs. There’s no rush with him. We have to get it right with him so he has a long run of it and goes the rest of his career without anything major,” Walker said.

As the Rhinos navigate the challenges of the Super League season, Walker’s focus remains on guiding the team through this interim period while the club seeks a permanent replacement for Rohan Smith.

“When he came in, we were down to the bare bones, and we’ve had players return and consistently training, so I don’t think it’d be fair on both parties.”
