Leeds Rhinos Part Ways with Rohan Smith in Mutual Agreement
Leeds Rhinos have announced the departure of head coach Rohan Smith on Wednesday afternoon. The Australian-born Smith has left Headingley by “mutual consent” following a disappointing start to the season.
Disappointing Start to the Season
The Rhinos have won less than half of their games across all competitions so far, culminating in an 18-10 defeat at the hands of Hull FC last Saturday. Their early exit from the Challenge Cup and slipping position in the race for Super League playoff spots have ultimately led to the club’s decision to part ways with Smith.
Potential Candidates for the Rhinos’ Coaching Role
As Leeds now search for their next leader, several experienced names have emerged as potential candidates to take over the reins at the storied club:
Brad Arthur – The former long-time Parramatta Eels boss departed the NRL club just last month, but reports suggest he’s eager to explore opportunities in the Super League. His resume includes a Grand Final appearance in 2022.
Jason Demetriou – Another Australian coach on the radar, Demetriou boasts extensive experience in the British game, having played over 200 Super League matches and previously coached Keighley Cougars. He was most recently let go by the South Sydney Rabbitohs.
Danny McGuire – A true Rhinos legend as a player, McGuire has been working as an assistant coach and is viewed as a potential future head coach, though he turned down the top job at Castleford earlier this year.
Paul Rowley – The Salford Red Devils’ highly-regarded head coach could be tempted by the resources and ambition of the Leeds club, though retaining him may be Salford’s priority.
Jason Ryles – The experienced Australian, who has worked as an assistant coach for several NRL clubs, is currently being linked to the Parramatta Eels vacancy, but may consider a first major head coaching role in the Super League.
