Rugby League: Leeds Rhinos Narrowly Avoid Upset Against Bottom-Placed London Broncos
In a tightly contested affair, the Leeds Rhinos managed to edge out the bottom-placed London Broncos 17-16 in golden point extra-time, thanks to a match-winning drop goal from Brodie Croft.
The Broncos took a 16-10 lead at halftime, with tries from debutant Josh Rourke, Rhys Kennedy, and Iliess Macani putting them in a commanding position. However, the Rhinos fought back in the second half, with Rhyse Martin’s try and conversion levelling the scores at 16-16 with 10 minutes remaining, ultimately forcing the game into golden point.
It was Croft, the former Man of Steel, who stepped up and slotted the decisive one-pointer to secure the victory for the hosts, denying the Broncos a famous upset at Headingley.
The win, though far from convincing, will provide a much-needed boost for the Rhinos as they look to turn their fortunes around under the expected imminent arrival of new head coach Brad Arthur. The Rhinos’ squad boasts significant talent, and Arthur, who previously spent a decade in charge of the Parramatta Eels, will be tasked with unlocking the team’s full potential and pushing them towards the playoffs, with the club currently sitting seventh in the Super League table.
Amidst the concerns, there have been some positive signs for the Rhinos, with the performances of James McDonnell and Ash Handley particularly noteworthy. The 24-year-old McDonnell has been a standout this season, showcasing his skills with a delightful flick pass that led to a try, while the ever-reliable Handley continued his impressive scoring form.
Credit must also be given to the spirited London Broncos, who despite sitting at the bottom of the table, have not thrown in the towel this season. Coach Mike Eccles has done a commendable job in maintaining the team’s effort and competitiveness, and their performance at Headingley was a testament to their resilience.
As the Rhinos look to solidify their position in the league, the addition of Arthur could provide the much-needed spark to turn their fortunes around.
