The Leeds Rhinos Face Forward Pack Challenges Amidst an Uneven 2024 Season
The Leeds Rhinos have experienced an up-and-down 2024 season so far, showcasing their ability to compete with the top teams in the Super League, such as their victory over the Catalans Dragons. However, they have also encountered some setbacks, evident in their dramatic collapse against the Huddersfield Giants. One of the primary criticisms of Rohan Smith’s side has been their lack of power through the middle, with the absences of key forwards James Bentley and Tom Holroyd due to prolonged injuries further exacerbating this issue.
Amidst these challenges, the Rhinos face the potential departure of Tom Holroyd, with reports indicating that the South Sydney Rabbitohs are eyeing the prop as a replacement for the outgoing England international Tom Burgess, who is set to join the Huddersfield Giants in 2025. With the recruitment window now open following the May 1st deadline, Serious About Rugby League has identified five players that the Leeds Rhinos could consider signing for the 2025 season to address their forward pack needs.
Potential Forward Pack Targets
Tom Amone, the Leigh Leopards prop who has been in high demand, with several reports linking him to a potential move to the NRL. Amone’s size and power could make him an ideal fit for the Rhinos, potentially forming a formidable forward line alongside the likes of Oledzki, Holroyd, Sangare, and Lisone.
Romain Navarrete, the experienced French international who has played for the Catalans Dragons and the Wigan Warriors. Navarrete’s vast experience and his previous stint in the UK could make him a viable option to bolster the Rhinos’ front row.
Thomas Mikaele, the towering 6-foot 4-inch prop, is also a name to consider. The former Warrington Wolves player, currently with the North Queensland Cowboys, could provide the physical presence the Rhinos’ pack is seeking.
The long-rumored move of Martin Taupau to Leeds may finally come to fruition, as the Samoan international’s contract with the Brisbane Broncos is set to expire. Taupau’s explosive power could be a valuable addition to the Rhinos’ forward pack.
The Rhinos could look to bring in experienced England international Mike Cooper, who has had a successful career with Wigan Warriors and Warrington Wolves, as well as a stint in the NRL. Cooper’s veteran presence and know-how could provide the much-needed edge and leadership to the Leeds pack.
