Late Harry Smith Penalty Gives Wigan Warriors Narrow Victory Over Castleford Tigers
Wigan, UK – In a tight, hard-fought affair at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle, a late penalty from Harry Smith ensured the Wigan Warriors edged past the Castleford Tigers with a 10-8 victory.
While Wigan’s performance may not have been vintage, Liam Marshall’s brace of tries and Smith’s accurate boot proved pivotal in securing the two points for Matt Peet’s side.
“Bevan French showed flashes of brilliance with a solo break that led to Marshall’s second try, providing the much-needed momentum shift for the Warriors.”
Youngster Zach Eckersley also put in a solid shift, nearly breaking through for a try of his own in the first half.
Despite a quiet opening period, Marshall was a constant threat whenever he got his hands on the ball, taking his chances clinically. Meanwhile, skipper Liam Farrell led from the front with a strong defensive display as Wigan weathered the Castleford pressure.
In the end, it was Smith’s reliable boot that made the difference, slotting the decisive penalty to hand the Warriors a hard-earned two points on the road. Though not their most polished performance, Wigan will be pleased to have ground out a victory against a resilient Castleford outfit.
