St George Illawarra Dragons’ Jack de Belin Weighs Options Between NRL and Super League
Jack de Belin, the veteran forward for the St George Illawarra Dragons, has confirmed receiving offers from several Super League clubs to play in England in 2025. However, the 33-year-old’s priority remains to continue his career in the NRL.
De Belin’s current contract with the Dragons expires at the end of the 2023 season, and while there is interest from NRL teams, including the Dragons, the offers are limited to one-year deals. The veteran forward is seeking longer-term security.
“It’s nice to know there are options over there,” de Belin told AAP. “I could go overseas essentially. Maybe if I didn’t think I was up to the speed of the NRL anymore, or if I didn’t have it in me, I could definitely go over there.”
Despite the interest from Super League clubs, de Belin’s preference is to secure a deal in Australia. He has held talks with the Dragons regarding a two-year contract extension.
“I would prefer to get the two years so I don’t have to go through this whole process again next year,” he said. “I have been at the club for a long time. I feel like they know what kind of player and person I am. I was hoping to get that, but at the same time, it is a business and they have to do what they have to do as well.”
De Belin has spent his entire NRL career with the Dragons, making his debut in 2011 and going on to appear in over 200 matches for the club. He has also represented Papua New Guinea at the international level.
While the prospect of a move to England is now on the table, with several deals from Super League clubs, de Belin remains focused on extending his stay in the NRL. “I would like to get something finalised pretty quickly,” he added.
