Hull KR Facing Disciplinary Woes After Tough Challenge Cup Exit
Hull KR’s hopes of a second consecutive Challenge Cup final appearance were dashed on Saturday, as they succumbed to a defeat against Wigan Warriors. However, the team’s troubles may only worsen, with the potential suspension of one of their star players looming.
Disappointing Results and Offensive Limitations
The weekend’s loss followed a similarly disappointing result against Warrington Wolves the previous week, which denied Hull KR the opportunity to top the Super League table. While the two defeats highlighted the side’s offensive limitations against strong defensive units, it was the nature of the Wigan defeat that has sparked the most controversy.
Controversial Tackle and Potential Suspension
Footage of the game shows center Peta Hiku making heavy use of his left shoulder in a tackle on Wigan’s Jai Field, seemingly connecting with the Australian’s head. Referee Chris Kendall was in close proximity but failed to issue a red card, a decision that has drawn criticism from both fans and the Hull KR Academy Head, Jason Netherton.
“It was direct contact with the head and should have been a red card,” he stated firmly, distancing himself from any suggestion of bias towards his club’s player.
The matter is now set to be reviewed by the Match Review Panel, with two other players from the semi-final fixtures also facing potential disciplinary action. Should the Panel find Hiku’s tackle worthy of a suspension, it would further compound Hull KR’s woes, as they look to regroup and turn their attention to the remainder of the Super League season.
