Hull KR Coach Peters Provides Positive Update on Luckley and Minchella Ahead of Challenge Cup Semi-final

In his pre-match press conference, Hull KR coach Willie Peters offered an encouraging injury update on key players Sam Luckley and Elliot Minchella ahead of Saturday’s Challenge Cup semi-final clash against Super League champions Wigan Warriors.

The Robins were without their captain Minchella (groin) and prop Luckley (wrist) for last Thursday’s 20-8 defeat against Warrington Wolves. However, Peters revealed that both forwards are making positive progress in their recoveries.

“Sam’s okay,” Peters stated. “There is a little bit of an issue there so it’s something that we might have to have a look at a little bit later on in the year.”

Regarding Minchella, the coach added, “Mini’s on track. He trained yesterday, he didn’t do the whole session but he’s hoping to do more tomorrow.”

With the prospect of having Minchella and Luckley available for the high-stakes semi-final in Doncaster, Peters acknowledged the tough selection decisions facing his forward pack. However, he expressed confidence in the depth of his squad, including the potential return of Tom Opacic, who has performed well for the club previously.

Separately, Peters committed his long-term future to Hull KR this week, signing a contract extension until the end of the 2028 season. The Australian coach expressed his deep affection for the club and his family’s contentment living in England, stating, “The family’s comfortable, the family’s happy first and foremost. If my family weren’t, then it would make my decision difficult because I’ve got a family that I absolutely love.”

Peters also highlighted the similarities between Hull KR and the NRL club he grew up with, praising the community-driven nature of the Robins. Acknowledging the work still to be done, he said, “We are on a journey, we’re certainly not there (yet) but it’s exciting and I want to be part of that and I want to finish the job that we’ve started.”
