Hull FC Bolster Squad with Overseas Signings in Bid to Revive Fortunes
Struggling Super League side Hull FC have announced the signing of two overseas players, Jed Cartwright and Treigh Stewart, in an effort to turn around their challenging 2024 season.
The club currently sits joint bottom of the Super League table, having managed just one win from their opening 13 games. After the departure of Tony Smith as head coach in April, interim boss Simon Grix has been overseeing operations, with the club’s Director of Rugby, Richie Myler, spearheading a significant rebuilding process.
Incoming Head Coach and New Signings
Incoming head coach John Cartwright, set to take charge for the 2025 season, has already secured the signings of John Asiata and Jordan Abdull as his first two recruits. Amidst the squad overhaul, club legend Tom Briscoe has returned from Leigh Leopards, while Yusuf Aydin joined from local rivals Hull KR. However, the club’s fortunes are yet to take a turn for the better.
Overseas Signings Confirmed
In a bid to spark an immediate turnaround, Hull FC have now confirmed the signings of Jed Cartwright and Treigh Stewart, who will join the club with immediate effect, pending successful visa applications. Both players have penned 18-month deals, keeping them at the MKM Stadium until the end of the 2025 season.
“I’m feeling fit and firing after playing a handful of games for the Knights in the NRL in the first half of the year. The body’s feeling good, so I’m ready to rip in when I arrive in England,” said Jed Cartwright, the son of incoming coach John.
Treigh Stewart, a full-back from Papua New Guinea, is eager to make his first-grade debut, having played in the Queensland and New South Wales Cup competitions. He said, “To be able to make my first-grade debut at some stage is going to be pretty big for me.”
Director of Rugby’s Perspective
Richie Myler, the club’s Director of Rugby, expressed his delight at securing the signatures of the two overseas players, stating that they will bolster the squad’s back-row options and provide additional attacking threat in the full-back position.
