The past week has been a whirlwind for Hull FC, with a flurry of changes sweeping through the club. Tony Smith has been sacked as the head coach, two star players have been released, and Richie Myler has retired from playing to take on a Director of Rugby role at the MKM Stadium.
Amidst the turmoil, Simon Grix, the former Halifax Panthers head coach, has been tasked with leading the club until a new head coach is appointed. Describing the situation as “chaotic” and “a little bit uncomfortable,” Grix acknowledged that the team’s poor performances aren’t solely the responsibility of Tony Smith, but a collective failure of the coaching staff and the players.
“The players have been showing good effort during the training sessions, despite the challenging weather conditions. I hope that the team can take pride in their performances and not get too distant from their potential.”
Addressing the rumors of player discontent, Grix firmly denied any suggestion that the players were unhappy with Smith’s leadership. He stressed the importance of open communication within the team and noted that different opinions are natural in a group of 40 or more individuals.
The caretaker coach acknowledged that the players, along with the coaching staff, have let Smith down. However, he also pointed out that the club has faced a series of setbacks this season, including injuries, player availability issues, and suspensions, making it a challenging start to the campaign.
