Hull FC Director of Rugby Richie Myler Addresses Incident with Warrington Wolves Coach Sam Burgess
In the aftermath of last weekend’s Super League match between Hull FC and Warrington Wolves, Richie Myler, the director of rugby at Hull FC, has downplayed the incident between himself and Warrington head coach Sam Burgess.
The contentious situation arose when Warrington was docked an interchange due to an administrative error. Warrington player Adam Holroyd was not included in the official squad list provided to clubs, though he was named in their online squad. Myler insists he was not the one who flagged this issue and was simply approached by the match commissioner and a heated Burgess before the game.
“I said I had no idea what he was on about and I didn’t believe it was my position to say whether they could or couldn’t have a sub back,” Myler explained. “I understand what he’s saying about player welfare, but I think that’s a bigger conversation that’s above me and above my role.”
Myler further clarified that there was a miscommunication, as Warrington believed the director of rugby could have a say in the number of substitutions allowed. However, Myler politely asked the match commissioner, who confirmed it was not his role to make that decision.
While Burgess appeared to shoulder barge Myler as he made his way down the tunnel, Myler played down the incident, stating, “I think it was made more of than what it is. I get it, it’s a story to drum up a bit of attention on us but there’s no hard feelings from me.”
Myler reiterated that he was simply answering a question about allowing Warrington an additional substitute, and he was informed it was not within his authority to do so.
