Hull FC Director of Rugby Downplays Incident with Warrington Coach
In the aftermath of Warrington Wolves’ administrative error that led to a reduced interchange for their recent game, Hull FC director of rugby Richie Myler has sought to play down the incident involving Warrington head coach Sam Burgess.
Warrington were unhappy when they were limited to just seven interchanges for their match at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, as Adam Holroyd had not been officially named in their squad list, despite being included online. Burgess, the Wolves’ head coach, confronted Myler before the game, believing the Hull FC director of rugby was responsible for the complaint that resulted in the reduced interchanges.
However, Myler has insisted he was not the one who flagged Warrington’s squad list issue, and merely responded to Burgess’ approach. “I wasn’t the one that flagged that they had named someone in the squad that wasn’t in there,” Myler explained. “I just got approached by the match commissioner and Sam Burgess, who was heated and animated before the game.”
The Hull director of rugby went on to clarify that he did not believe it was his role to determine whether Warrington could have an additional substitute, stating, “I politely asked the match commissioner whether that was my role, and he said no. Sam took offence to that, and that’s what it is.”
Myler played down the incident further, stating that he has no hard feelings towards Burgess, who appeared to shoulder barge him as he made his way down the tunnel before the Super League game. “I think it was made more of than what it is,” Myler said. “I get it, it’s a story to drum up a bit of attention on us but there’s no hard feelings from me.”
