A Month After Tony Smith’s Sacking, Hull FC Remain Coachless
Almost a month since the dismissal of head coach Tony Smith, Hull FC are still without a replacement at the helm. The West Hull club has undergone significant changes in recent weeks, with the appointment of Director of Rugby Richie Myler and the departure of long-serving CEO James Clark. However, the search for a new head coach continues.
One of the candidates linked to the vacant role, Paul Rowley of Salford Red Devils, has opted to remain with his current club, rebuffing Hull FC’s reported attempts to lure him away. Several other names have been associated with the job, and now one of those prospective coaches has found employment elsewhere.
Former South Sydney Rabbitohs boss Jason Demetriou, who was reportedly on Hull FC’s radar, has been confirmed as a new addition to the commentary team at Australian broadcaster Triple M. The ex-Wakefield Trinity player was sacked by the Rabbitohs earlier this year, with his tenure marked by a disappointing end to the 2023 season and a poor start to the 2024 campaign.
The Sky Sports-compiled shortlist for the Hull FC job features a mix of NRL and Super League personalities, including current interim head coach Simon Grix, as well as assistants from Warrington Wolves and Castleford Tigers. Danny Ward of Hull KR and the high-profile duo of Shaun Wane and Adrian Lam have also been mentioned as potential candidates.
Intriguingly, the reports of Hull FC’s interest in Lam have cooled, with Leigh Leopards owner Derek Beaumont revealing that the club had offered the former Wigan Warriors and Papua New Guinea boss a three-year deal, which Lam claimed was not entirely accurate.
As the search for a new head coach continues at the MKM Stadium, Hull FC will be eager to find the right person to lead the team forward and navigate the challenges of the rugby league landscape.
