Huddersfield Giants Reject Loan Approach for Half-Back Olly Russell
Huddersfield, England – In a recent development, the Huddersfield Giants have turned down an approach from another Super League club interested in acquiring half-back Olly Russell on loan.
The decision comes as Huddersfield coach Ian Watson has settled on a preferred spine for the team, with Jake Connor at fullback and Tui Lolohea and Adam Clune in the halves. This new-look combination has yielded positive results, with the Giants winning their last five games across all competitions.
The surge in form has seen the team progress to the Challenge Cup semi-finals and secure a strong position in the Super League standings ahead of their upcoming match against St Helens on Thursday.
Despite Russell’s limited opportunities in the Giants side in recent weeks, coach Watson emphasized the importance of retaining the half-back’s services at this critical juncture. As he explained in his pre-match press conference:
“Olly’s a great kid and he deserves to be playing. We’ve had an enquiry but unfortunately for Olly we can’t allow him to go out on loan. He’s a high-quality half-back and we need him at this moment in time because we have picked up a few niggles.”
However, Watson did acknowledge the possibility of revisiting the loan option for Russell after the Challenge Cup semi-finals, should the player continue to struggle for game time.
